Description

Dynamic Goniometer AR uses three printed 4 × 4 cm markers and the device camera to visualize joint motion in augmented reality.
Range of motion by measuring angles is frequent need in every day clinical tasks during patient examinations by orthopaedic surgeons, physicians, physical therapists and veterinarians. With the classic goniometer the position of joint should be registered in degrees in maximal and minimum position in order to calculate the range of motion of joints.
Augmented reality (AR) offers a novel method of blending virtual and real word. Costly scientific labs offers motion capture data system and Augmented Reality (AR). Apple developed and popularised (AR) Augmented Reality technology readily available for its devices and added a powerful set of commands of object Recognition. The app is a powerful combination of these two environments which coverts Apple devices to expensive motion analysis tools.
How it works? Three built-in different known QR-codes Images should be printed in a common printer preferably as adhesive label in order to be easily attached to joint parts. Each printed QR Image separately is intended to work as a marker over the joint of interest and it must be one square inch. Each printed QR Image is unique and should be placed in certain order manually over the joint of interest by attaching them physically namely over proximal, middle and distal part of the joint sequentially. While seeing the markers by the App though the device camera, the markers are captured and recognised continuously in real time. Over the printed markers in augmented reality, three different coloured spheres (green for proximal part, red for middle part and blue for distal part) are presented and assigned respectively. The spheres are connected by two virtual cylinders (PM and MD). The angle subtended by PM cylinder and MD is the dynamic angle of interest (with vertex M). The angle and its complementary are printed in degrees on screen continuously and their values are updated by the respective position of the joint in real time. While the joint is moving the whole augmented structure with spheres is moving following continuously the joint movements. The min and max angle values achieved by the patient joint and the range of motion in total (either for the complementary angle values) are also printed in degrees on screen. The dynamic nature or the app is that once the markers are recognised and captured, the three spheres are moving according to patient joint movement live and continuously following simultaneously the new position of each marker. This powerful feature offers a great help to surgeon in an effort to record in real time and in augmented reality the motion of the joint, and measure the range of the motion.
The Dynamic GoniometerApp is medical software aimed for orthopaedic surgeons, physicians, physical therapists and veterinarians providing tool that allow doctors to:
- determine the most accurate possibly way, in Augmented Reality (AR) directly angles, range of motion all dynamically while the patient is moving the joint of interest. The app automatically recognises, three different markers. The markers are assigned with three coloured spheres namely red, green, blue spheres which are connected with cylindrical lines.
