Description
A study app for Japan's Energy Manager qualification, thermal field (エネルギー管理士 熱分野). This national qualification is based on the Energy Conservation Act; holders are appointed as energy managers at factories and other sites above a certain level of energy consumption. All 600 practice questions come with a clear explanation.
■ Subjects Covered (600 questions across 4 courses, 14 areas)
【Course I — Energy management and regulations】
• Energy Conservation Act and related orders (50) — purpose of the Act, duties of designated businesses, judgement criteria, reporting
• Energy situation, policy and fundamentals (30) — domestic and global energy supply and demand, units, energy conversion
• Fundamentals of energy management (40) — judgement criteria, management standards, measurement and records, improvement cycles
【Course II — Heat and fluid flow fundamentals】
• Thermodynamics (85) — first and second laws, properties of state, steam properties, cycles
• Fluid mechanics (45) — fluid properties, Bernoulli's theorem, pipe flow and pressure loss, pumps
• Heat transfer (40) — conduction, convection, radiation, overall heat transfer and thermal resistance
【Course III — Fuel and combustion】
• Fuels and combustion management (75) — solid, liquid and gaseous fuels, combustion methods, burners, combustion control
• Combustion calculations (45) — theoretical air, excess air ratio, flue gas volume, heat balance and efficiency
【Course IV — Heat utilisation equipment and its management】
• Measurement and control (40) — temperature, pressure and flow measurement, automatic control, PID tuning
• Boilers, steam plant and prime movers (55) — boiler types and construction, steam piping, turbines, cogeneration
• Heat exchangers and heat recovery (25) — shell-and-tube and plate types, economisers, waste heat recovery
• Refrigeration and air conditioning (25) — refrigeration cycles, types of chillers, HVAC systems, moist air
• Industrial furnaces and thermal materials (25) — furnace types, refractories and insulation, furnace heat balance
• Distillation, evaporation, drying and gasification (20) — principles of distillation and evaporation, drying, gasification
Candidates choose either the thermal field or the electrical field. Course I is common to both, and a Course I pass carries over even if you switch fields. To pass you need at least 60% of the marks in every course of your chosen field. A course you pass stays valid for three years, so you can build up course passes across several years rather than clearing all four at once. This app records your accuracy per subject automatically, so you can see how ready you are for the course you plan to take next.
The exam is held once a year on a Sunday in early August, across four sittings. In Course IV you answer six of the eight questions offered, so having a couple of strong equipment areas pays off. The official paper uses fill-in-the-blank answer-group selection; to make studying more effective this app reformats the same topics into five-option single-answer questions.
