UPDATE - edited as the developer is investigating, there seems to be a problem with the Samsung Ultra S23 phone and I'll edit again when an answer is found - it's between 2 and 4 stops under even after recalibration with an 18% gray card. It's too inconsistent even to up the ISO to get a correct reading. I sadly can't trust this app on this phone. Datacolor Grey card and Sekonic L-308s meter in both reflected and incident modes (which matched)

Thanks for the feedback. A 2–4 stop error isn’t expected and is usually device-specific rather than an app issue: must be caused by the camera API or the way a specific phone reports brightness values. I’d like to investigate your S23 if you can contact me through the app. As you can see you are the first person having such unconsistent values.

To be truly useful should allow you to set your reference zone and show exposure and other zones in a relation to that. For film I want to be able to set my reference zone to zero or one and then have the exposure show me what's needed for the targeted point to be placed in that reference zone. For digital same thing but the reference zone should be 9 or 10. Reset button isn't visible when they Samsung zfold is closed. Qverall needs some work.

Thank you Roland for your review. This app only wants people to begin thinking as Adams did, doesn’t pretend to condense a lifetime of study. Look at it as a starting point. Changes are under construction but a single star doesn’t push confidence 🥲. Maybe you want to reconsider? 👊

of very limited use for zone system users. it only allows you to set your measurements at zone v. Would be greatly improved to be able to select which zone you want to measure and then calculate shutter speed/aperture combinations given your set iso. In my experience, this would be closer to how Ansel used the zone system to expose for the shadows.

Thank you for the feedback. GrayZone currently uses the first measurement as a Zone V reference and then shows where subsequent readings fall on the tonal scale, along with their EV difference. The app is intended as a fast spot metering and tonal evaluation tool inspired by the Zone System, rather than a full Zone placement calculator. 😉

I can't get over how brilliant this app is! The exposure values it gives for a particular scene under shoot are 'bob' on. It works using Ansel's Zone system, recording five zones. It then displays the exposure along with the range of the scene. For the price it's definitely an app for every serious photographer's tool bag, especially if you're into large format, film photography. It also delivers for digital photographers whereby analogue lenses are used in conjunction with a DSLR.
