The ATO app allows you to manage your tax and super affairs on the go – making tax simple & easy.

For a personalised tax and super experience, you will need:
- a myGov account linked to the ATO
- to register your device by providing and verifying an Australian mobile number and an email address.

With the ATO app, you can:
- follow your 2024-25 tax return from start to finish, including checking prefill information, tracking the progress of your return and its outcome
- view in real-time when lodgments and payments are due, and seamlessly action them via our online services
- set up quick login using your device’s security features like face and fingerprint recognition
- view messages in real-time when important changes are made to your ATO record and to verify certain actions before they are submitted
- lock your ATO record if you see fraudulent activity, to keep it safe
- verify if a call claiming to be from the ATO is genuinely from us
- view your tax accounts, with links to our online services to view transactions, create payment plans or pay
- see an overview of your super balance and accounts
- view your employment income and superannuation contributions required from your employers
- check your personal, business (sole traders only) and registered agent’s details
- access our most popular tools.

Our most popular tools include:
- myDeductions: record your work expenses as an employee or sole trader. Sole traders can also record income. At tax time you can easily upload your myDeductions records to your tax return or email a copy to your tax agent.
- Tax withheld calculator: calculate the amount of tax to withhold from salary and wage payments.
- ABN Lookup: search for an Australian business number (ABN).
- Business performance check: compare your business with similar businesses in your industry using the latest Small business benchmarks.

The ATO app can automatically send usage data to help improve the app. The data we collect doesn’t identify you and you can choose to turn this off at any time in your app’s settings.

GPS can be used to record trips in myDeductions. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

To record a trip in myDeductions using the GPS option, the app needs access to your device location.

Bought a new phone, reset the old one, and suddenly the ATO app turns into Fort Knox. Whoever designed this login system deserves a special award for “Advanced Taxpayer Lockout Engineering”. Send a code to Google 2FA? No. Send a code via SMS? No. Send a code via email? Also no. Send a code through MyID? Nope, not that either. The only recovery option is “Send a code to the ATO app” — which is fantastic when the entire problem is that you can’t access the ATO app anymore because the old phone is gone. Absolute genius-level system design. The ATO website still works for now, although who knows for how much longer. The app itself has become basically useless. Meanwhile MyID has existed for nearly a decade and still struggles with basic things like government-issued name changes or divorce records to update name in the system. The whole setup feels perfectly engineered to lock people out, make them miss deadlines, and then fine them for “not lodging tax and pay on time”. Peak government app development.

What an absolutely stupid app. Makes you go through the nth degree to set up a myID then won't let you login unless you have your old phone because it locks it to specific devices. I swear the IT people who come up with this rubbish live on a different planet to everyone else

Device that has been registered was no longer use and no access to it. Now It doesnt let me register new device. I called ATO and this has been raise "TWICE" .till now theres no progress. they just keep raising it but no action.

App does not work

Set up the app and went to login the next day and I get a useless error message that says there has been an error and it’s not possible to log you in. Tried again several times over a few days and the same issue. No error number and no phone number to call for support. You’re just directed to a list of frequently encountered issues and then a list of ATO phone numbers, none of which say ATO app support. I wish I’d stuck with accessing ATO via the MyGov app. At least that worked consistently. Now I can no longer access it through that system.

Killing myself would be easier

why ATO sends code to ATO app whilst trying to login to ATO app. You monkeys! And when there isn’t any issues with the app, somehow your services become unavailable How useless, send a text to my device. I’m already annoyed just logging into your services.

Ridiculously bad

Horrendous user experience, combined with MyGov and the Digital ID process, even logging into the ATO becomes an almighty challenge. Definitely needs improvement from developers asap-considering how integral the ATO services are, and how quick they can be to penalise if something is submitted late.

Logged out on new phone, no one can help me.

I got a new iPhone. Same login details, same number etc. But the ATO app won’t work on it. It says it will send a login code and it never arrives. Person on the phone at ATO said ‘it’s because you’ve got a new phone.’ But none of my other apps stop working when I get a new phone, I just log back in!? The person on the phone said they escalated the case but I haven’t heard anything and now I can’t access my details for my tax form. Disaster.
